Brief biography

Dr. Muhabat Adeola Raji is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia. She is a Clinical Microbiologist with a Doctor of Natural Science degree from Jena, Germany, an M. Sc. Degree in Medical Microbiology, an MBBS, FMCPath (Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College, Nigeria, Faculty of Pathology), and a B. Sc (Hons, Chemistry) degree.

Her research interest focuses on multidrug-resistant hospital pathogens, particularly bacterial agents and their molecular characterization. She is interested in testing alternative antimicrobial agents, such as essential oils in pharmaceutical preparation (emulgels), in treating clinical conditions such as acne vulgaris, and diagnostic approaches to detecting these agents in contaminated hospital environments using fabricated optical biosensors through nanotechnology. She had part of her training on molecular characterizing of bacterial pathogens, particularly Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Lausanne, Switzerland. The training experience, based on using the highly discriminating technique of Double Locus Sequence Typing (DLST) and SCCmec characterization of MRSA, was facilitated by a World Bank-assisted STEP-B funding grant awarded to her.

Dr. Raji's leadership roles are a testament to her initiative and dedication. She was the Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology (2008-2012), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Nigeria, and she also coordinated the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology of the Lagos State University, College of Medicine (LASUCOM). As the Head, Dr. Raji was actively involved in setting up the Microbiology laboratory attached to the new laboratory complex in the hospital. She also served as the Chairman of the Hospital Infection Control Committee. In addition, she assisted in investigating the MRSA outbreak in the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.

She was a member of the Governing Council of Fountain University (an Islamic faith-based private Nigerian University).

Dr. Raji's active involvement in professional organizations is a testament to her commitment to the field. She is a member of the Infection Control Africa Network, the American Society for Microbiology, and the Nigerian Medical Association. In addition, Dr. Raji has given both oral and poster presentations at international conferences and has published in peer-reviewed journals.
