About Dr. Wessam Abouarghoub

 

Dr Wessam Abouarghoub is an Associate Professor at the Department of Operations and Project Management, College of Business, Alfaisal University in Riyadh.

 

Dr Abouarghoub's academic journey includes a master's in Shipping, Trade and Finance from Bayes (CASS) Business School and a PhD in Economics from Bristol Business School, UWE. With over 15 years of teaching experience, he has successfully instructed students in subjects such as Operations Management, Operations Analysis, Lean, Business Data Analytics, International Transport, Maritime Economics, and Shipping Management and Finance. Current affiliations include Cardiff University, Bristol University, Leeds University, Kühne Logistics University, Ajman University and Universidad de los Andes. He also held roles as an external examiner at the American College of Greece – DEREE College (2016-2021) and Liverpool John Moores University (2016-2020), overseeing various maritime and business programs. Earlier, from 2007 to 2013, he was an Associate Lecturer at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England. His professional journey includes working as a Senior Officer for GNMTC, a shipping company, from 1998 to 2002.

 

Driven by a passion for research, Dr Abouarghoub has made significant contributions to the field. His research interests encompass supply chain management, transport operations and emissions, transport business analytics, shipping freight economics, shipping finance and risk management, and maritime personnel's well-being. These interests have resulted in external funding for over one million dollars and over 40 academic publications, including articles featured in world-leading journals.

 

Dr Wessam Abouarghoub is a Principal Expert of the Giro Zero project (£800), leading the development and design of a toolbox containing a network of KPIs and multiple dashboards to visualise and simulate scenarios. The Giro-Zero project is part of the UK-Pact initiative. It supports countries that strive to overcome barriers to clean growth and have high emissions reduction potential to accelerate their climate change mitigation efforts. His expertise relevant to this project includes using big data to model, measure and forecast performance (i.e. economic, environmental, social, and governance) to improve strategic decision-making. He has experience working with global international companies in maritime and supply chain industries, designing and structuring practical sustainable KPIs and constructing learning curves to evaluate relational gain in projects.

A recent career highlight is his role as the contributing editor for the 2023 edition of 'Economics of Sea Transport and International Trade', published by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS). This book, essential for ICS professional exams, is acclaimed for providing a comprehensive introduction to the economics of the shipping industry and serving as an invaluable reference for commercial practitioners. It offers an accessible overview of economic and commercial aspects, key trends, commodities, and the anatomy of international trade, making it a vital resource for newcomers and maritime economics professionals.
