Dr Altamimi's expansive academic interests and expertise include civil law and procedure, international commercial arbitration, international trade law, responsibility of States, and international courts and tribunals. His doctoral thesis "The Challenge of Enforcing the Rulings and Recommendations of the WTO Dispute Settlement Body: An Interactional Legal Analysis", covered some of these subfields. In addition to his jurisprudence degree at King Saud University, Altamimi studied law at Aberdeen and Leeds. He was a research fellow at the Centre for Commercial Law in Asia at Singapore Management University, and he is member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and an advisory board member of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration. He published multiple papers and book chapters with reputable publishers such as Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Brill, and Routledge. In terms of volunteering, he has worked as a peer review editor, and since 2021 he has been coaching and arbitrating in international moot competitions (Arabic and English).
